Although those in the Black community are 20 percent likelier than the general population to suffer from serious mental health problems, there’s been little attention devoted to helping therapists understand the unique challenges Black women face. A history of institutionalized racism and stigma have left many African American women deeply distrustful of our mental health systems. This workshop will focus on what therapists need to know about the range of roles Black women play in their families and communities, the messages they receive about their bodies, and the discrimination they encounter in the world.
